Welcome to the Special Olympics World Summer Games ATHENS 2011 MVP website!
The city of Athens will be honored to host the Special Olympics World Summer Games from 25 June to 4 July, 2011.The World Summer Games promise to be not only a spectacular event, but also a historic humanitarian experience that will build global cultural bridges and acceptance for people with intellectual disabilities.
Special Olympics athletes from 185 countries, representing every corner of the world, will join together at the birthplace of the Olympic Games, showing how through sports they bring justice, build acceptance, foster inclusion and change the world.
For more than forty-two years, Special Olympics has shown how the common bond of sport fosters more harmonious communities, places in which each person is welcome and contributes to the strength and vibrancy of the whole. The 7,500 Special Olympics athletes taking part will compete in an atmosphere of acceptance and dignity in 22 Olympic-type sports, showing the world the limitless potential of people with intellectual disabilities. They will inspire the world with examples of human triumph over disability, of the power of human caring over indifference, of cooperation over division, and of love over hate.
For 11 days the athletes will capture your heart and minds leaving an unforgettable vision of the world without prejudice, a world of acceptance, and a world where everybody wins.
As an MVP Fan you are invited to take part in Special Events and Activities throughout the Games, such as presenting awards to the athletes, as well as receive Special Services to make your visit enjoyable.
