FAQ

Questions we expect.

Is this the official site for the 2011 Athens Games?

No. The original athens2011.org belonged to the Athens 2011 Organising Committee and was retired after the Games ended in July 2011. This is an independent, non-commercial fan tribute that picked up the lapsed domain in 2026 — built as a love letter to the original site and a forward look at Santiago 2027.

Is this affiliated with Special Olympics International?

No. We have no relationship with Special Olympics International, Special Olympics Hellas, Special Olympics Chile, the Santiago 2027 host committee, the Hellenic Republic, or the Government of Chile. For official information go to specialolympics.org or santiago2027.org. The Special Olympics name, oath, and marks belong to their respective owners.

Where do the heritage images come from?

From earlier captures of the original athens2011.org website from 2010 and 2011. We pulled a handful of low-resolution interface images that are recognizable as part of the original site's design — banners, gallery thumbnails, header marks — and surfaced them with credit. If you represent a rights holder and would like an image removed or credited differently, please email us.

Why pick up an old Games domain at all?

Two reasons. First — the original site was a small, surprisingly warm corner of the early-2010s web, and watching it fade isn't great. Second — every World Games leaves a wake of dormant domains; using one as a typographic bookmark between Games (Athens 2011 → Santiago 2027) felt like a more interesting use of the URL than letting it cycle through registrar parking pages.

Will you accept donations or sell tickets?

No. This site does not accept donations, sell tickets, sell merchandise, or solicit anything. If you want to support the Special Olympics movement, do it through specialolympics.org. If you want to support Santiago 2027 specifically, do it through the host committee.

Can I contribute a photo, memory, or correction?

Yes — especially if you were there in 2011 as an athlete, volunteer, host family, coach, or member of the press. Get in touch via the link below and we'll fold it in with credit.
